Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)

Root canal treatment is required when the nerve of your tooth has been infected through either decay or injury. An infection can cause an abscess and symptoms can include a dull ache to a severe pain. If a root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and your tooth or teeth may need to be taken out. A root canal treatment will remove all infection from the root canal and stop the infection from spreading to the jaw bone. The root is then cleaned and filled to allow it to heal and prevent further infection.

Root canal treatment is a highly skilled and precise procedure and more than one appointment may be needed. We are priviledged to be able to refer you to our resident Specialist Endodontist who will carry out treatment using an advanced Zeiss microscope.

At your appointment local anaesthetic will be delivered to make sure you are comfortable and cannot feel any pain. The infected pulp is removed and any abscesses are treated. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for filling.

Once the treatment is complete you may be referred back to your original dentist if additional cosmetic work (e.g. a crown) is needed. Your dentist would then talk you through the possible options. During the procedure a local anaesthetic is delivered to make you comfortable, the procedure is not unlike having ordinary fillings.

The very last alternative is to have the tooth removed. Once the nerve is destroyed it is impossible to cure and we would never leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Extractions are always a last resort as it is important to keep as many of your natural teeth as possible.
