What is Botox?

Botox is the brand name used for the drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum for reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Other anti-wrinkle injectable brands such as Dysport, Myobloc, and Xeomin are also available. However, Botox was the first brand to use the botulinum toxin.

There are seven different serotypes of botulinum neurotoxin produced by seven different strains of the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Botulinum serotype A is the active ingredient in Botox. The FDA approved it as a cosmetic drug in 2002.

How does Botox work?

When injected into targeted areas in very small doses, it relaxes muscles by blocking signals between nerves and muscles. In the absence of a signal, the muscle does not contract. As a result, this response diminishes the appearance of facial wrinkles.

Botox benefits

Botox is one of the most dynamic anti-ageing treatments available to enhance a youthful appearance. While dermal fillers work by plumping up lines and wrinkles, Botox works by preventing lines and wrinkles from forming altogether. It is minimally-invasive and reacts fast. Botox only takes 2 or 3 days to start working after being injected, and within 2 to 3 weeks, you will see its full effect. It requires no downtime and has proven results.

What areas can be treated at Mouth Dental?

You can achieve full facial rejuvenation by using Botox to relax different facial muscles from forehead to neck. Our professionals ensure the treatment appears natural and effective for each individual, taking into consideration their facial aesthetics. We will also examine your medical history in detail to ensure the treatment is completely safe for you.

We use Botox to effectively;

  • Smoothen fine lines
  • Soften frown and forehead lines
  • Smooth out glabella (space between eye brows)
  • Eliminate crow’s feet (lines at the corners of your eyes)
  • Create an eyebrow lift
  • Fix a gummy smile
  • Improve a square jaw
  • Prevent teeth clenching
  • Sharpen the jawline
  • Minimise neck bands (platysmal bands)
  • Reduce bunny lines on the nose
  • Smoothen smokers lines around the mouth
  • Fix a wrinkly chin and improve skin dimpling of the chin

How does the Botox treatment work?

Your facial rejuvenation treatment starts with a consultation to determine the best way to re-contour skin. We ensure you only undergo the procedure when you are fully informed and comfortable with the process.  The treatment can usually be done on the same day.

Your face is cleaned and disinfected before the treatment begins. You will be asked to mobilise your face muscles for exaggerated facial expressions like frowning, squinting, and raising your eyebrows to identify precise muscles to target. With the help of numbing cream and ultra-fine needles, Botox is administered to the selected regions of the face. Different areas of the face require different amounts of injections.

The process will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to complete. You may notice mild redness and slight swelling immediately after the treatment, which generally resolves within 30 minutes. The amount of injections needed varies from area to area on the face.

Botox acts by blocking the chemical acetylcholine, responsible for transmitting electrical impulses that cause facial muscles to contract.

Is Botox safe?

Botox treatment is quite safe as long as it is administered by experienced and qualified professionals in a well-established clinical setting. Only recommended doses should be used in areas safe for injection. If you have allergies, it is vital that you discuss your medical history with your practitioner.

Botox is not recommended if;

  • You are feeling unwell
  • You have a neuromuscular condition, drooping eyelids (ptosis), or weak facial muscles.
  • You have a skin infection
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is also possible to experience minor side effects that include;

  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms

FAQs

What is in a Botox injection?

Botox contains a purified form of injectable botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is licensed for use in the UK and has been tried & tested and proven to be safe & effective for skin treatments.

What is Botox used for?

Botox has a number of therapeutic uses. However, in skincare, it is used to reduce signs of ageing. It acts as a muscle relaxer to smoothen wrinkles and fine lines.

How long do the results last?

Effects of the treatment usually last for 3- 4 months.

What aftercare is necessary after treatment?

Do not wear makeup for at least 4 hours after Botox treatment. You should also not use any skin peeling chemicals on your face for 2 days. Try not to lie down and sleep for at least 4 hours after the treatment. You should not do any strenuous exercise or drink alcohol for 2 days. Stay away from sun tanning, saunas, and exposure to heat for 2 weeks. Protect your skin with high SPF cream. It is highly recommended not to rub, massage, or apply pressure to the face for 24 hours after the treatment.

What's the difference between using dermal fillers and Botox?

Dermal fillers usually contain hyaluronic acid that restores lost volume to reduce the appearance of facial lines. Botox diminishes wrinkles by blocking nerve signals that make line-forming muscles contract.

Can I Botox and dermal fillers in combination?

Yes, you can use Botox and dermal fillers simultaneously, except not in the same facial area. They contain two different primary ingredients. While Botox uses a neuroprotein, dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid. Combining both treatments at the same time can offer full facial contour enhancement.
