What is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is basically any surgical procedure performed on your teeth, gums, jaws or other oral structures. Treatments include tooth extractions, gum grafts, implant placements and jaw surgeries and are performed by an oral surgeon or maxillofacial surgeon or periodontist. These are dental experts who have received training to provide specialised services with a focus on bones, skin, tissues face muscles, jaw, mouth and the administration of anesthesia.

What are the instances that require this surgery to be performed?

Tooth extractions
There are a number of reasons which may cause you to need a tooth extraction. Some of the more common reasons include tooth decay, periodontal and gum disease, tooth impaction where one tooth pushes directly against another, trauma and overcrowding. A root canal treatment will be necessary if you have a cracked tooth from an injury or due to genetics or a deep cavity or issues from a previous filling.
Dental implants

This is a long term treatment that replaces a missing or falling tooth or teeth. Missing teeth can cause a lot of additional oral issues and a dental implant solves that problem by inserting a titanium implant to the jaw bone as support for the artificial tooth. After being fitted with time the implant gradually fuses with your jaw holding into place firmly. Once this process is complete a false tooth, crown or denture is placed on top of the implant and secured into place.

Bone grafting

Bone grafting is a dental surgical procedure used to replace or rebuild bone at the root of a tooth if the bone has been lost. This makes it possible for a patient to have an implant if their natural jaw bone is not enough. This is performed under local anesthesia and considered as a minor surgery. The material used can either be from another part of your jaw or synthetic.

Emergency treatments – example after accidents or trauma

Oral surgery is done if needed owing to an accident or trauma in order to alleviate serious pain, stop bleeding or to save a tooth. Any infection that could be considered life threatening is also a dental emergency and treatment is done accordingly.

How much does it cost?
