Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving the way your teeth look. According to a survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), improving appearance was a deciding factor in 86% of patients. Often, to accomplish this, dental professionals need to provide services such as dental implants or veneers.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

The goal of cosmetic dentistry is to improve the way your smile looks. This method of professional oral dental care focuses on improving the appearance of your mouth, teeth, gums, and overall smile. Common procedures include teeth whitening, veneers, fillings, and implants.

If your teeth are stained, discoloured, worn, chipped, broken, misaligned, misshapen, or have gaps between them, modern cosmetic dentistry can give you a better smile. This will improve the appearance of your smile through one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures. Cosmetic dentists work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you achieve your smile makeover. Typically, good looking teeth and good oral health go hand in hand– that’s why many cosmetic dentists use some of the more advanced procedures for improving oral health in order to achieve a bright white smile or perfectly aligned teeth.

You should seek out a cosmetic dentist if you are hoping to whiten your smile and improve your overall dental aesthetics.

Who can perform cosmetic dental procedures?

A cosmetic dentist is a professional that has a general dentistry licence. All cosmetic dentists have the training to provide general dentistry but some combine the two or concentrate purely on cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic dentistry typically requires artistic talent on top of general dentistry skills, which is something we stress in our cosmetic dental treatments at Mouth Dental.

What are the instances that require this kind of surgery to be performed?

Cosmetic surgery may be needed to be done for certain conditions such as irregularities with teeth or accidents or injury to teeth and gums.

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be one of the simplest and least expensive ways to improve your smile. At Mouth Dental, Enlighten Whitening is an increasingly popular tooth whitening method used by many of our patients. The Enlighten Whitening treatment will cost £650. We also offer At-Home whitening procedures, starting from £399. For this type of treatment, your dentist will instruct and guide you on how to whiten your teeth at home with the items provided to you.

There are also whitening products available over the counter at retail stores for convenient at-home whitening: whitening toothpastes, rinses, and whitestrips.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made coverings of tooth-colored porcelain or composite resin that cover the front surface of the teeth. After removing about a half-millimetre of enamel from the tooth surface, these thin shells are bonded (cemented) to the front of the teeth, changing their colour, shape, size, or length. Veneers are often called “Hollywood teeth.” This process starts at £850

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding can repair decayed, chipped, cracked or misshapen teeth; it is also a good cosmetic dental alternative to or replacement for silver fillings. During this procedure, a durable plastic material called resin, which is tooth-coloured, is applied to the tooth and hardened with an UV or laser light which bonds the material to the tooth. Thereafter, your dentist will trim, shape and polish it.

At Mouth Dental we offer Edge and Composite Bonding, each starting from £199 and  £299 respectively. Discuss with your dentist which type of bonding will be better suited to your needs. The bonding process takes about 30-60 minutes.

Dental Crown

A dental crown, or cap, fits over and replaces the entirety of a decayed or damaged tooth above the gum line. This restores its shape, size, strength and appearance. A dental crown prevents a weak tooth from breaking, and can hold a cracked tooth together.

Dental crowns can be used cosmetically to cover misshapen or severely discoloured teeth. Crowns can be made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, resin, or ceramic, and costs start from £825

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium replacement roots inserted into the bone socket of the missing tooth. As the jawbone heals, it grows around the implanted metal post, anchoring it securely in the jaw and providing a foundation for a replacement tooth. This procedure starts from £1,995.

Other Options

  • A bridge may be made of crowns for the teeth on either side of a gap with false teeth in between.
  • A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth.
  • Dental braces can straighten crooked or misaligned teeth and it works by applying continuous pressure over a period of time to slowly move teeth in a specific direction.

Aftercare Instructions

It is imperative to have all the helpful information you need regarding the recovery process prior to beginning your cosmetic dentistry procedure. Deciding to have cosmetic procedures such as dental implants or veneers is an important decision to make, therefore it is always wise to have these questions answered beforehand so you can make an informed decision.

As with all other major adjustments to the mouth, there will involve a process of recovery. However, some procedures will have little to no recovery time at all– this includes porcelain dental veneers. The only real concerns that you may face after having your veneers placed is that your teeth may be a bit sensitive and you may have some gum tenderness.

More complex restorative dentistry procedures, like dental implants, require a bit of recovery time and aftercare to ensure your oral health stays optimum. You may have some soreness and swelling in the surrounding gums, as well as some additional tenderness at the implant site. Your dentist may prescribe medication for the pain, but more often than not, over-the-counter pain relievers are advised. Complete healing for dental implants can take up to six months.

No matter which cosmetic treatment option you choose, good oral hygiene will always be paramount in your journey to full recovery.

Without proper brushing, flossing, and rinsing of teeth in the post-op period you’ll be putting yourself at risk for procedure failure. Taking care of your oral health is taking care of your whole body. Remember to follow all after-care instructions given to you by your dentist, and call the office if you have any questions or concerns.
