Crossbite Treatment at Mouth

A consultation with our orthodontist will allow you to understand your condition better. We use 3D scans to evaluate your malocclusion and determine how treatment can correct the axial inclination of the teeth. The duration of the treatment depends on the extent of the occlusal disharmony.

Fixed braces, as well as Invisalign, are available as treatment options. Your orthodontist will help you decide which would offer better success for you. Designed for improved comfort and aesthetics, clear and lingual braces provide a more discreet solution.

Our consultants are Invisalign-trained, and our clinic is equipped with Invisalign technology. Using the iTero™ Element scanner, we take a fast and precise 3D digital scan of your teeth to map out a custom digital treatment plan just for you. A series of clear aligners custom-made for you will shift teeth into place without the need for metal braces. We also offer a choice of high-quality retainers, including Vivera and Essix.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crossbite?

A crossbite is an orthodontic issue where the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when your mouth is closed. Crossbites can involve a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth. They can be bilateral or unilateral and classified as anterior or posterior.

Anterior Crossbite – one or more upper front teeth sit behind the lower front teeth when the jaws are closed.

Posterior Crossbite – one or more upper back teeth (molars) sit inside the lower back teeth when biting down.

How can you tell if you have a crossbite?

The main sign of a crossbite is an uneven bite where the upper and lower teeth do not fit together smoothly and evenly. In a normal bite, the upper teeth should slightly overlap the lower teeth. If you notice that some of your upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth or vice versa, it may indicate a crossbite. Other signs include misaligned teeth, teeth wear, difficulty chewing, speech issues, and jaw discomfort.

What causes crossbite?

A crossbite may result from several different factors. These include genetics, abnormal jaw growth, and prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use, premature loss of baby teeth, chronic mouth breathing, dental & skeletal asymmetry, and failure to address dental alignment issues promptly.

Is it possible to treat severe cases of crossbite?

Yes, it is possible to treat severe crossbites. However, the specific treatment approach will depend on the severity of the crossbite, the age of the individual, the cause of the crossbite, and other factors. Severe crossbites may require more complex and comprehensive treatment plans. Commonly used orthodontic treatments include braces – traditional or clear, removable aligners, palatal expanders, and tooth extraction.

Can adults receive treatment for crossbite?

Yes, adults can successfully receive treatment for crossbite. Removable aligners like Invisalign trays can offer more flexibility and discretion in your busy life.

How long does it take to correct a crossbite?

The time it takes to correct a crossbite with braces can vary based on several factors. These include the severity of the condition, your age, the type of braces used, and the patient’s adherence to the orthodontist’s instructions. Generally, mild to moderate crossbites can take 6 to 18 months. More severe cases may take longer than 18 months, sometimes up to 2 or 3 years.

Is Crossbite treatment painful or invasive?

Braces are non-invasive and are not painful. However, traditional braces may cause some discomfort initially and after subsequent adjustments. This discomfort is usually mild and temporary. You may experience some soreness in teeth and gums as braces begin to straighten your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers and orthodontic wax can help manage soreness or irritation. Wearing Invisalign is a more comfortable experience. Invisalign aligners are custom-made using flexible patented SmartTrack™ material, which is laser-trimmed to the gum line for greater comfort.

Does Crossbite treatment require surgical procedures?

Severe crossbites may sometimes need surgery. In extreme cases of skeletal crossbites, where the misalignment in the jaw size and position is severe, orthognathic surgery may be necessary. This surgery involves repositioning the upper or lower jaw to correct the bite alignment.

What happens if a Crossbite is left untreated?

An untreated crossbite can lead to several potential dental and oral health issues. It is essential to address a crossbite promptly to prevent complications and maintain optimal oral health. Some consequences of leaving a crossbite untreated include weakened enamel from excessive tooth wear, gum recession, jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, facial asymmetry, speech difficulties, difficulty chewing food properly, and low self-esteem attached to smiling.

How long does it take to treat Crossbite?

It can take anywhere from 6 to 36 months. Your treatment plan may include several treatments or a single treatment.

How long do results last?

Results are permanent with proper aftercare. You must wear a retainer to ensure the corrected alignment remains intact. Hygienic measures like regular brushing and flossing will protect your teeth from decay and gum disease. Eating and drinking more oral-friendly food and drink avoids stains, cavities, and enamel harm.
