Frequently asked questions

What is dental decay?

Dental decay occurs when a sticky layer called plaque builds up over your teeth mostly due to a lack of dental hygiene. This attracts bacteria which overtime damages the surface of your teeth and gums causing dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.

What are cavities?

Cavities are areas on the hard surface of your teeth that are permanently damaged and take the form of tiny openings or holes. A cavity is permanent and can only be treated with a filling or root canal or if beyond repair tooth extraction. Cavities are caused by tooth decay and excess bacteria in the mouth.

What causes dental decay?

Dental decay happens as a result of plaque buildup. Plaque is a sticky substance that forms from residue food particles mixing with the saliva in your mouth. This attracts bacteria which causes dental decay and gum disease.

What causes cavities?

Teeth have a hard outer layer known as enamel, a middle layer called dentin and a centre or pulp. When plaque increases it attracts bacteria that in turn turn the sugars in the foods and you consume into acid. This acid breaks down the enamel allowing the decay to get through and form a cavity. Once formed it continues to spread deeper within the tooth.

Are cavities and dental decay treatable?

Unless caught at the very early stages cavities can only be treated with fillings. Dental decay can be reversed if treated early with a varnish treatment or fluoride treatments to remove plaque and help strengthen the tooth enamel and prevent the decay from damaging the tooth. Adopting good oral hygiene habits will also prevent plaque buildup.

What happens if you let cavities and dental decay go untreated?

If you neglect dental decay and cavities then you will cause irreparable damage to your teeth, gums and overall oral health. Tooth loss, mouth ulcers, and dry mouth are just some of the problems that will arise with worsening dental health owing to neglected cavities and dental decay.

Can severe dental decay be treated?

It will depend on the severity of your dental decay. Fluoride treatment and varnish can help reverse the early stages of tooth decay but once it reaches the inner pulp of your tooth you will most likely need a root canal which will help salvage the tooth instead of removing it. If that is also not possible then extraction is the only option.

What are the treatment options available to treat decayed teeth?

Fluoride treatments, fillings, crowns, direct pulp capping and root canals are some of the treatments that can be done to restore or save the tooth. However, if the tooth is decayed beyond repair then an extraction will have to be carried out.

Do decayed teeth need to be extracted?

Yes, if the tooth is beyond salvaging then it has to be extracted. If not removed and the tooth is infected it will not heal and instead cause harm to your gums and bone. Infection can also spread to your other teeth creating the risk of sepsis.

What is the procedure involved in treating a cavity?

Fillings are the main way to treat a cavity. Known as restorations,  fillings are made from various materials such as amalgam fillings or tooth-coloured composite resin to fill the cavity and give the tooth structure. They help protect the tooth from further decay.

How do you identify a cavity?

Regular hygienist appointments are an effective way to keep your oral health at its best and spot potential dental problems such as cavities early. Further signs may include tooth discolouration, mild to sharp pain when eating or biting down and in severe cases visible holes.

How do you identify a decayed tooth?

Visible buildup of plaque, tooth discolouration, continuous pain along with tooth sensitivity, black, grey or brown spots appearing on your teeth and bad breath are some of the signs that you may be having a decayed tooth or teeth.
