What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a restorative treatment that surgically fastens metal fixtures to your jawbone below the gums, which act as roots for mounting artificial teeth. Implants become fused to your bone through osseointegration, providing reliable, stable support. You can replace one or more teeth, and they will feel and act like natural teeth. A dental implant system is made up of an implant body, abutment, and crown. An abutment can anchor permanent or removable dentures, bridges, and individual crowns.
There are two types of dental implants
Endosteal implants —a metal post is surgically implanted directly into the jawbone, and as the surrounding gum tissue heals, a second surgery connects an abutment to it, which artificial tooth or teeth are mounted onto individually or grouped on a bridge or denture.
Subperiosteal implants —a metal frame with posts is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. Once the gums heal, the frame gets fixed to the jawbone. Posts of the frame protrude through the gums, and artificial teeth are then mounted to these.
What are dental implants made out of?
A majority of implants are made from titanium as it is a metal that consistently fuses with the bone. However, if you are allergic to titanium, zirconia is a bioceramic that does not trigger chemical reactions and is used for implants.
Most abutments are made from titanium or zirconium. Other materials such as gold alloys, cobalt-based alloys, titanium alloys, surgical grade stainless steel, ceramic materials, or Polyetherketone (PEEK) are also used.
Dental crowns that are mounted onto the abutment are made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-porcelain, all-ceramic, pressed ceramic, and all-resin.

What are the benefits of dental implants?
From their high durability to masticatory function, they have numerous benefits that other tooth replacement solutions cannot offer. Dental implants,
- Look natural
- Improve biting and chewing
- Do not cause speech impediments, and your speech will be natural
- Stabilise your teeth from shifting by preventing bone loss through osseointegration
- Help preserve your facial structure by keeping your jaw bone strong
- Do not require special maintenance other than normal oral hygiene
- Reduce the risk of cavities and tooth sensitivity in nearby teeth
- Improve your self-esteem. Missing teeth or moving dentures can make you self-conscious and limit your laughter and eating in social settings. Dental implants remove all that worry and give you the confidence to smile, laugh, eat any food, and talk.
Dental implants: The procedure
The first step of dental implant treatment is developing a bespoke treatment plan that addresses your individual needs. An assessment of your oral health is carried out by an oral surgeon and restorative dentistry experts at our clinic. We help you decide the best implant option for the best outcome after 3D scanning and imaging to reconstruct your jaw. If there is insufficient jawbone or quality of bone that can compromise osseointegration, you might need a bone augmentation procedure.
If a tooth extraction is required on the site, this will be performed first. Having sufficient bone density that can support an implant will enable your oral surgeon to carry out the procedure at the same appointment. It is called an immediate implant.
Placing a dental implant is carried out under local anaesthetic. During surgery, a small incision is made to open the gum and expose the bone. A hole is gently drilled into the bone where the implant metal post is placed. The jawbone and the implanted metal post fuse together as the bone heals. A temporary crown is placed, which you can remove for cleaning and when sleeping.
After the osseointegration, the abutment is attached to hold the prosthetic tooth securely. Under local anaesthesia, your oral surgeon reopens your gum to expose the implant, the abutment is attached to the implant body, and the gum tissue is then closed around it.
Once the gums are healed in about two weeks, the new tooth will be attached at the final restoration. You will have more impressions made of your mouth and remaining teeth to construct the artificial tooth to fit in the new place perfectly. A single crown fits on one tooth implant, a bridge needs two implants, and a full mouth restoration needs 6-8 dental implants to support bridges and dentures. All-on-4 or All-on-6 implant treatments are also available for full mouth restoration.
Our high calibre artificial teeth will resemble your natural teeth and their colour so no one would know you are wearing prosthesis.
What is the recovery period?
Recovery from dental implant surgery can be prolonged or fast, depending on each patient’s capacity for healing and pre-surgical preparations.
Successful clinical performance of dental implants depends on their firm osseointegration. The initial healing time of the incision and the wound is usually 1-2 weeks. However, osseointegration can take 3-6 months. Healing from the abutment surgery takes about 1-2 weeks. If you require pre-dental implant bone grafting, the recovery process can take 3-12 months, and post-dental implant surgery healing time should also be factored in.

- A soft food diet is best for at least a week following the treatment.

- Maintain proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist for cleaning and dental exams.
Dental implants vs. Dental Bridges vs. Dentures: What is the difference?
A dental implant is a permanent metal fixture that serves as a tooth root. It is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gums. A crown is mounted onto it to replace a missing tooth. A single crown can replace a single tooth.
If you have missing teeth from different parts of your smile or either of the arches, implants can fill those gaps. A loss of several teeth in a row can be replaced by a dental bridge supported by 2 or more implants. It is more practical than getting an implant for each tooth in the series.
If you have all of your teeth missing or a full arch, dentures supported by implants can effectively restore missing teeth. Implant-supported bridges and dentures prevent artificial teeth from sliding around, shifting, or falling out.
How long do dental implants last?
They last a lifetime. However, proper maintenance and oral hygiene play a crucial role in deciding their lifespan. Artificial crowns are subject to normal wear and tear. These might need replacements in 15 to 20 years.
How much do dental implants cost?
A dental implant treatment at a London dental practice can start from £1,995.
The condition our teeth are in has an impactful relation to how much we are willing to smile, laugh, and converse with others. Healthy, white, strong, and straight teeth give us more confidence to express our happy emotions and interact with others without feeling self-conscious. Dental implants are the most effective dental restoration. You no longer have to feel insecure about crowns, bridges, and dentures shifting, sliding, or falling off, and you can eat freely without holding back on the food you love.
