What are facial Aesthetic procedures in dentistry?

Dentistry professionals, especially cosmetic dentists, understand facial aesthetics better. They also understand how cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics are anatomically related and produce the best facial aesthetics when working in harmony. Facial rejuvenation has more credibility in a regulated space like a dental clinic. Getting Botox treatments and fillers at a dentist is completely safe.

Perfectly-sculpted lips with full form and a proportionately-balanced body complement bright, straight teeth. Injecting hyaluronic acid dermal fillers plump up, lift, and correct lip symmetry. Another dentistry-related issue that can be corrected with injectibles is a gummy smile. A small amount of Botox weakens the muscles that raise the lip. It creates a gentler and softer upward pull when the patient smiles, reducing the amount of gum on show.

Downwards pointing mouth corners can give an older and despondent look that can affect facial aesthetics. It can be treated with Botox by injecting it into the depressor angularis oris muscle to elevate the corners of the mouth, diminishing the downward pull.

Injectibles can also target frown lines, crow’s feet, and wrinkles by either restoring volume or relaxing facial muscles.

Who carries out these procedures?

Neuromodulators such as Botox are prescription-only drugs and should be administered by prescribing practitioners. Dermal fillers, if not administered by a trained professional, can have botched effects. Being able to regulate cosmetic injectible amounts to precision and target treatment areas requires clinical knowledge and training.

Dentists were some of the first professionals to administer injectibles as they are used to help patients with conditions like temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) – chronic pain in the jaw. It is also used by dentists to treat bruxism, wideset jaws, and a gummy smile. The multidisciplinary approach to facial aesthetic treatments with dental professionals and therapists working together is considered the best way to deliver treatments.

For these reasons, dental practices are offering facial aesthetic treatments you can have in a safe and highly-reliable clinical environment.

What are the instances that require this kind of procedure to be performed?

As we age, our skin becomes loses its natural elasticity and becomes thinner. Natural oil production in the skin decreases. Fat in the deeper layers of the skin depletes. The body starts to lose collagen, which is important for the skin, muscles, bones, and connective tissues, causing skin laxity (loose) and loss of volume. The facial muscles also decrease in volume and elasticity. Deflation of fat and muscle & bone loss results in deep creases and sagging skin. Age-related bone loss in the face also leads to retraction of the jawline, the descent of the nose, and loss of high cheekbones.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in our skin. It gives our skin hydration and volume. Over time our body stops making hyaluronic acid and the only way to replenish it is through HA injections.

Wrinkle smoothing injections

Purified botulinum type A toxin or Botox is used to soften lines, creases, and wrinkles that appear on the face as you age. Neuromodulators, when injected into facial muscles, block nerve impulses that contract the muscles, ensuring they remain stress-free and relaxed. When muscles are relaxed, skin smoothens and lines diminish.

When injected appropriately, Botox gives a natural-looking, youthful, and refreshed look. Clinical expertise is essential to subtly enhance the appearance of the skin so it does not look puffy, overdone, or droopy.

Facial rejuvenation

Dermal fillers are gel or fluid-like substances that are injected under the skin to build volume and restore collagen and elasticity loss. Fillers can minimise deep facial lines, wrinkles, and skin folds, as well as increase the fullness and definition of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, and jawline. Cosmetic fillers mostly contain hyaluronic acid, a substance our own bodies naturally produce but decreases as we age.

They stimulate collagen and elastin production, prolonging the fullness of facial features and firmness of the skin. Fillers are used for sculpting and contouring the face to enhance facial aesthetics.

Benefits of cosmetic dental surgeries

  • Perfectly-aligned straight white teeth are a confidence booster. You will find yourself smiling more often and without insecurity when you know you have beautiful teeth.
  • Straight teeth that are not overcrowded help you brush and floss better to maintain good oral hygiene. Damaged or chipped teeth can retain food particles, leading to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Missing back molars can affect your nutrition and mastication. Replacing missing teeth with dental implants will allow you to chew your food properly and eat all foods without having to restrict certain foods.
  • Missing, misaligned, damaged, or discoloured teeth take years off your smile. Bright white sets of well-aligned and healthy teeth make you look younger.

Aftercare instructions

Botox

Botox usually does not require any downtime. However, you should avoid touching, rubbing, or putting physical pressure on the treated area for about 3 days. Any activity that increases your heart rate should be avoided for 24 hours. Gently cleanse and moisturise your face after 24 hours. Do not lie down for the first 4 hours.
Avoid getting any facials, facial massages, exfoliating rubs, chemical peels, laser treatment, or microdermabrasion for about a week. Wait at least 4 hours before using makeup, and do not use sunbeds for a week.  Stay away from heat exposure and direct sun exposure for 24-48 hours. Avoid hot showers, tanning beds, hot tubs, and saunas.
Skip alcohol for a day or two before and after the procedure. Alcohol increases fluid retention and thins the blood, worsening the mild bruising caused by the injections.

Dermal fillers

Post-dermal filler care also requires you to not disturb the injected area with pressure or unnecessary touching. Avoid exercising for 24-48 hours and sleep on your back the first few nights to prevent pressure on your face.
Your face should not be exposed to UV rays for about a week. Wear sunscreen and avoid sunbathing. Exposing your face to extreme cold too can have negative effects.
Do not use AHA, BHA, Retinols, or Vitamin C therapy and oil-based makeup for 24 hours. You must avoid facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, IPL or energy-based treatments, and microdermabrasion for two weeks after treatment.
Doctors advise not to consume alcohol for 24 hours or any blood thinning substances. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Selecting a facial aesthetician

Ensure that your aesthetician is qualified, certified, and properly trained to administer the injections. It takes clinical and dermatological knowledge to identify the areas that need to be injected for the desired effects and the correct dosage that gives a natural look. The improved definition of facial contours and proportionate lip augmentation is necessary for successful facial aesthetic treatments. These should be expertly assessed to achieve the precision and accuracy of the injections.

Frequently asked questions

Are the injections painful?

Generally, no. We use ultra-fine needles that only cause a pin-prick sensation. If you have a low pain threshold and for more sensitive areas, a superficial local anesthetic or numbing cream may be used before administering the shots.

Why do I need facial aesthetic treatments?

Anti-wrinkle and anti-ageing treatments give you youthful skin that makes you appear younger. They fight the signs of ageing, tighten skin, enhance contouring, and improve the symmetry of the face using non-surgical procedures.
Neuromodulators like Botox smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. It targets frown lines, crow’s feet, and smoker’s lines. Botox can lift the eyebrow arch, raise a down-turned smile, fix a gummy smile, correct a dimpling chin, elongate the face, and sharpen the jawline.

Dermal fillers correct moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and skin folds by filling in lines. They can also increase the fullness of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, and jawline.

How long do the results last?

Results of fillers can last between 6 and 18 months. The duration of the effects depends on the type of filler, your skin condition, and the location it is administered to. Botox results usually last for 4 months.

When do I start seeing the results?

Botox results begin to show in 3-4 days. It could take up to 7 days for first-time users. Filler results begin to show within 24 to 48 hours after their injections, and you will see the best results after two weeks.

What makes Botox and dermal fillers different from one another?

Dermal fillers build volume to soften deep wrinkles, plump up lips, and define facial features. Botox relaxes muscles by blocking nerve signals to diminish wrinkles and fine lines.
