What are dental fissures?
Dental fissures are deep and narrow pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. Fissures and pits are deeper in molars than premolars. They are more common in children and teenagers. These grooves often lead to cavities as they are difficult to clean when brushing teeth.
Dental fissures are natural to an omnivore’s tooth anatomy. They form a variable chewing surface that allows for effecting chewing. However, other factors can also cause fissures, such as,
- Vigorous tooth brushing with hard-bristled brushes
- Jaw clenching
- Tooth grinding (bruxism)
- Result of uneven pressure on the teeth (abfraction)
- Eating more sugar and acidic foods that wears down the enamel
- Plaque build-up
- Misalignments and malocclusions of teeth
Correctly brushing your teeth twice a day, rinsing with non-alcoholic mouthwash, rinsing your mouth after eating sugary or acidic foods, avoiding enamel-damaging foods, regular visits to the dental hygienist, and visiting the dentist for dental inspection are ways to manage this condition. However, none of the methods are more effective or time-saving than fissure sealants.
What are fissure sealants?
These are liquid resin composites or glass ionomers that can be painted onto teeth. They can penetrate the pits and fissures and seal them off from bacteria, sugar, starches, acids, and food particles.
Types of conditions that can be corrected by dental fissures
Sealants form a physical barrier and prevent bacteria from entering a tooth. They prevent tooth decay in adults and children alike. Dentists recommend sealants for the molar teeth, which first appear around the age of 6, and later around the age of 12. Third molars appear between 17 and 21 years old.

What to expect during the procedure
Applying fissure sealants is a quick and painless process. It only takes a few minutes per tooth and is less complicated than having a cavity filling. No anaesthetic or drilling is required.
The procedure involves a few simple steps:
- Teeth are thoroughly cleaned.
- The tooth surface is prepared for sealant bonding with a special solution.
- The liquid sealant is painted on, making sure it flows into the deep grooves and pits.
- The sealant is hardened with a blue light.
- After checking the bite, the excess sealant is polished off.
The blue light will completely set the sealant, and you will be able to eat and drink straight away. It might feel a little strange chewing and biting, but the feeling goes away soon enough.
Aftercare tips
Your fissures may be sealed up, but good oral hygiene is necessary to protect your teeth. With the sealants, it becomes easier to clean as hard-to-reach fissures are now covered up. Avoid eating hard candies or sticky candies and chewing ice to prevent any damage to the sealants. Regular dental check-ups will help maintain the sealants in their best condition.
How to clean your teeth after a fissure sealant treatment?
Sealants do not prevent all decay. Therefore, it is necessary to use fluoride toothpaste and clean your teeth twice daily with a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush. Do not use abrasive products or utensils to clean teeth. Floss after meals and use a non-alcoholic mouthwash to rinse.
How much do fissure sealants cost?
A fissure sealant can cost £60 per tooth.
