Frequently asked questions
What is Fluoride Varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a simple yet highly effective treatment that reinforces tooth enamel by strengthening the protective outer coating and reducing the risk of decay. It contains a higher concentration of fluoride than regular toothpaste.
What are the benefits of fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish helps prevent tooth decay and prevent new cavities from occurring. In some cases it is even effective in stopping cavities that have barely started. While it reduce cavities by 40% it is also suitable to treat hypersensitivity, which is ideal for adults.
Is it a painful procedure?
Not at all. Once the gums and teeth have been cleaned and dried with small piece of gauze, a thin layer of the fluoride varnish is applied to the front, back, top and bottom of the teeth. This substance hardens quickly onto the teeth, as soon as the saliva in the mouth touches it, The varnish is left on for about 4 to 6 hours.
Does the procedure include harmful substances?
This dental treatment has no harmful substances as the concentrated fluoride is applied in very small amounts and hardens immediately, minimising the risk of swallowing large quantities. The fluoride is harmless to swallow. It is completely safe when handled by experts in controlled environments. It can only cause problems if ingested in vast quantities.
Is the procedure safe?
When handled by an experienced dental hygienist the procedure is very safe. They know the exact quantity of fluoride to use and the correct application. Further, as the substance hardens quickly there is less likelihood of ingesting fluoride. There is absolutely no discomfort, and the fluoride is pleasant tasting.
How long does a fluoride treatment take?
The actual process with prep and application can take less than 10 minutes. It is a very simple procedure. However, it has to kept on the teeth for period of 4 to 6 hours for the fluoride to be absorbed by the teeth enamel, before being washed or brushed away.
Are the results permanent?
The fluoride varnish itself is removed after roughly 6 hours during which time it is absorbed by the teeth enamel forming a strong protective barrier. Strengthening the tooth enamel helps keep the teeth protected from decay causing bacteria. In adults the results will vary depending on the condition of the teeth.
How long do the results last?
High quality results generally last around three to four months. That is why it is recommended that the treatment should be done three to four times a year for maximum effectiveness. Studies have shown that even doing the treatment once a year has benefits. However, for maximum effectiveness and continued protection it is best to do the treatment more than once a year.
How do you take care of your teeth after the procedure?
You will feel the texture of the varnish on your teeth for a while which is normal. You will be asked not to eat or drink for about 30 minutes after the application. You can eat and drink as normal afterwards, but you may be asked to avoid hot foods and drinks. To ensure the varnish has enough time to absorb into the enamel you will be asked not to brush your teeth till the recommended time is over.
How much does fluoride varnish treatment cost?
Fluoride varnish treatment is not a very expensive treatment and can even cost roughly £24.00 and upwards. However it is best to discuss costs with your dentist and find out the best options for you. Some dental insurance policies may cover the cost of the treatment as it is a prevention treatment designed to promote good oral health, but this is usually for children. This is something you will have to check with your provider.
