Frequently asked questions

What is Geographic Tongue?

Geographic tongue, also known as benign migratory glossitis, is a condition that affects your tongue. It forms uneven red patches on the surface of the tongue. The patches look like a map, hence the name Geographic. Patches can last up to a year at a time, disappear, and then reappear in different parts of the tongue. Additional symptoms may include mild discomfort or pain during contact with spicy or acidic foods and other substances.

What causes Geographic Tongue?

Doctors are not sure of the exact causes of the condition. Geographic Tongue tends to run in families, and your genes might play a part in it. It is more common in people with psoriasis, eczema, type 1 diabetes, contact allergies, reactive arthritis, celiac disease, vitamin deficiency, hormone volatility, and stress. Having a fissured tongue may also make you susceptible to Geographic Tongue.

What does geographic tongue look like?

The smooth, red, and irregular patches that develop, heal and migrate on the top and sides of the tongue. In most instances, the red patches have a white border and do not contain the small raised bumps (papillae) that usually cover the tongue. A raised white border along the tongue is also common. Patches also change their size over time.

What areas of the tongue does this condition affect?

It affects the surface and the edges of the tongue. Lesions can also appear on the inside of the lips, the inner lining of the cheeks, and the floor of the mouth.

Is Geographic Tongue a serious condition?

No, it is a benign condition. It is not a sign of oral cancer. It is not an infectious disease and is not related to systemic infections. Geographic Tongue is not contagious. Occasionally, the red patches can become infected with thrush (candida), which is treatable.

At what point do you need to seek treatment for Geographic Tongue?

Seeking medical opinion will help identify any risk factors. A dentist can tell you if the lesions are a symptom of Geographic Tongue or whether they are a sign of other health conditions. If the burning sensation and irritation intensify, a dentist can prescribe medication to alleviate discomfort.
