What is Laser teeth whitening?

With time teeth become stained owing to illness, medication or the food and beverages such as blueberries, tea, coffee and red wine, we consume. Another factor is of course age which is why whitening procedures are so popular as they help you look younger. Laser teeth whitening is a cosmetic laser dentistry procedure and is one of the more popular whitening treatments available today. It is done in a dental clinic and involves placing a concentrated whitening gel on your teeth which is then heated up using a laser which whitens your teeth quickly. Zoom teeth whitening is one of the most common laser teeth whitening procedures, by which a 25% hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to the teeth before a blue plasma light activates the solution.

Laser teeth whitening vs other methods of teeth whitening: What is the difference?

Using lasers and a whitening peroxide gel, the laser teeth whitening procedure is popular for its clearly visible long lasting results. Many believe it to be the most effective way to gain whiter teeth in a short amount of time. Unlike bleaching that whitens the teeth beyond their natural colour, with laser teeth whitening it is more focused on restoring the natural colour by removing stains from the teeth.

While similar to whitening toothpastes in concept, this professional teeth whitening method, provides brighter teeth quickly thanks to the laser light that activates the whitening gel for maximum effective. Patients will see a dramatic difference in just one session, often up to seven to eight shades lighter.

Benefits of laser teeth whitening

Laser teeth whitening has proven to be one of the best cosmetic dentistry bleaching methods that helps remove stains and plaque while whitening teeth. There are a range of further benefits that contribute towards the procedure’s popularity.

  • A non-evasive and easy process
  • A quick and painless procedure
  • Removes very tough stains that other whitening procedures, such as home kits, cannot
  • The procedure is done by professional dentists
  • The option of lightening just a few very stained teeth
  • One of the most accessible teeth whitening procedures
  • Long lasting results

Benefits of laser teeth whitening

  1. Your cosmetic dentist will record the shade of your natural teeth and determine the quantity of whitening solution that will be needed along with the bleaching agent to achieve the desired shade
  2. You mouth will need to be dried before the treatment and this is done by using retractors to keep your tongue and cheeks away from the whitening solution. A gauze pad will be used to keep your mouth dry so that no saliva can interfere with the efficiency of the whitening solution.
  3. Your teeth are then coated with the whitening solution and left on for about half an hour to absorb. Only the front surface of the teeth are coated. The laser is then used to activate the gel and achieve the desired whitening.
  4. Once the desired shade has been achieved your mouth will be washed and rinsed to remove all residual whitening solution. You will noticer whiter teeth after just one session but can decide with your dentist if you need further session.
  5. You may be recommended the fluoride treatment, which is entirely optional. However, it does help keep stains away from your teeth for a while and to keep the bacteria in your mouth at bay.
