Frequently asked questions
What is an open bite?
It is a common dental condition that requires orthodontic treatment. Also known as bad bite, this is where the top and bottom teeth do not touch when the mouth is fully closed. Instead, there is a gap unlike in a proper bite when the upper and lower teeth connect all the way, with the upper teeth overlapping the lower slightly. Open bite can happen in the front or back of the mouth, with the front being more common.
What causes open bite?
They are most often caused by a poor skeletal relationship between the lower and upper jaws, especially when it comes to adults. For children over bite can occur due to thumb, finger or pacifier sucking, which put a strain on the alignment of the teeth. Older children and adults can cause it by tongue sucking which puts pressure on the upper front teeth.
How is open bite treated?
The orthodontic approach involves using braces as the best option to gently push and pull the impacted teeth into their proper positions. If the case is severe or if the orthodontic approach has failed for some reason, then corrective jaw surgery may be recommended.
What are the types of treatments available for open bite?
Metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners and retainers are considered the most effective, convenient and affordable orthodontic treatments to correct an open bite. These are suitable for both children and adults. However, for adults with severe open bite oral surgery may be recommended to reposition and align the bite issue.
Are there treatment options for severe cases?
For adults with severe open bite, oral surgery may be recommended if orthodontic treatments do not work for some reason. This is usually done only as a last resort if other treatment options do not yield results.
Is there a specific age criterion to seek treatment?
No, absolutely not. While it is easier to treat when the patient is younger, adult open bite too can be corrected using the same orthodontic treatments.
Is open bite treatment painful or invasive?
If the open bite can be corrected through orthodontic treatments such as braces and aligners then it is non-invasive and not painful, though there might be some discomfort. However, it does become invasive if surgery is needed to treat a more severe condition. You will be under general anaesthetic during the procedure so you will not feel pain but there can be minor discomfort during the recovery stage.
Does open bite treatment require surgical procedures?
Generally no, but if the case is severe and cannot be corrected with orthodontic treatments, then oral surgery will be required to correct the problem. The jaw surgery permanently secures the jaw into place with metal screws and plates.
What happens if an open bite is left untreated?
Open bite can lead to a number of oral health issues including gum disease, tooth decay, tooth wear, misalignment in other teeth, chipped or cracked enamel, snoring and sleep apnoea to name a few. It can also impede proper chewing and biting of food and speech causing a lisp in some cases.
How long does it take to treat an open bite?
There is no set timeline as it will depend on each individual case. For minor open bites it can take about 3 months but with anything requiring more adjustments, it can be anywhere between 12-24 months.
How long do results last?
A skilled and practised orthodontist will ensure you get the best results that will continue to last. However, to ensure that your teeth stay in their new positions you most probably need to wear retainers. Your orthodontist will be able to guide you on how to maintain the results of the open bite treatment.
How much do open bite treatments cost?
As an open bite can cause severe oral health issues, check with the NHS if you are eligible for treatment. Generally, treatment can cost between £2000 – £6000. However, if you require surgery then the cost will be around £20-25,000. Again, the cost will depend on the actual work that will need to be done to correct the issue.
