Sally McCarthy graduated from University College Cork and completed post-graduate training in Oral Surgery, Conservative and Adhesive Dentistry, and Periodontal Microsurgery. She completed a three-year Advanced MClinDent in Endodontology at the Eastman Dental Hospital, UCLH, graduating with first-class honours and was nominated for the UCL Dean’s Research Prize. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at UCLH and has contributed to MSc and Diploma postgraduate teaching in Endodontology.
She holds Membership in Endodontics and MFDS from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. Her research has been published in the International Endodontic Journal and British Dental Journal, she has co-edited textbooks on endodontics and traumatology, and presented nationally and internationally at conferences including the World Traumatology Congress Tokyo, IAOMS Singapore, ESE Paris and ESE Helsinki. Her work has earned awards, including the British Endodontic Society Research Prize, Royal College of Surgeons Research Grant and was nominated for the European Society of Endodontology Wladimir Adlivankine Research Prize. In recognition of her achievements in Endodontology, she has been awarded Specialist Membership of the European Society of Endodontology.
Sally has a strong interest in biohealth innovation. She was the recipient of a NASA scholarship and is involved in AI regenerative research with the Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital Bioskeletal Centre exploring biomaterials and craniofacial scaffold design.
She volunteers with oral surgery charitable clinics in the UK, Ireland, and Africa. Through her research she has secured NIHR funding to improve education, research, and access to dental trauma care for underserved populations. She provides pitchside dentofacial trauma support at elite sporting events including the Commonwealth Games, and supports professional sports teams. She has previously represented Ireland at European and World level in modern pentathlon, athletics, and waterpolo.
Her clinical practice combines advanced technical skill with a patient-centred approach, managing complex endodontic cases including root resorption, challenging anatomy, instrument separation, and endodontic surgery.
