Lip Enhancement

Lip Enhancement Treatment – What is it?

Lip enhancements, also called lip augmentations, are injectable dermal fillers commonly containing hyaluronic acid. It is a natural substance found in the body that helps add volume to your lips. Hyaluronic acid fillers improve lip shape, structure, and volume. They enlarge and reshape lips in dimensional relation to your nose, teeth, and surrounding facial features.

Other dermal fillers used for lip enhancement include collagen, Botulinum toxin, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, polymethyl methacrylate, and autologous fat (fat transplanted from another part of your body).

How does the treatment work?

During the procedure, one or more fillers are injected into the lips. The filler injections usually contain hyaluronic acid, a natural humectant found in the skin, eyes, synovial fluid of the joints. The natural production of hyaluronic acid begins to reduce as we age, along with collagen and elastin. Our lips lose volume, hydration, and plumpness as a result. Lip fillers replace that lost collagen and fat. The gel-like hyaluronic acid creates plumper and more defined lips by attaching itself to water molecules in the skin. The fillers are absorbed slowly and can be thickened or thinned to achieve the exact results you want.

A lip enhancement treatment can also correct fine lines in the lip area, especially at the corners of the mouth, to add volume to lift and define lips for a more youthful look.

Lip enhancements are perfectly safe as long as they are performed by qualified and experienced doctors and practitioners, such as a plastic surgeon, a dermatologist, or a cosmetic surgeon. You should not get a lip filler treatment from a beauty salon or spa.

Apart from the natural appearance lip fillers create, another main advantage of HA fillers is they can be dissolved with a special solution if there’s an adverse effect or if the patient does not like the new augmentation of the lips.

The treatment process

Before a lip enhancement procedure, you will have a free consultation with our practitioners. During this meeting, they will assess your lip concerns and discuss the best options to achieve the results you want. You will gain in-depth knowledge of the procedure, recovery, outcome, and cost. Please share your full medical history related to cosmetic concerns and treatments, so our professionals can decide the best treatment plan for you. Make sure you get all your questions regarding the treatment answered.

During treatment, a small amount of local anesthetic is administered so you won’t feel any pain when the lip fillers are injected. Your lips will be numb after 15-30 minutes. Some patients may receive a nerve block injection. The areas under treatment are carefully marked, and very fine needles are used to inject lip filler to one, multiple, or all parts of your lips. Marionette lines are also treated depending on the augmentation necessary. Areas under treatment are carefully marked, and very fine needles are used to inject lip filler to one, multiple, or all parts of your lips.

A single area is injected with only a very small amount of filler at a time – approximately 1 millilitre. And worry not, the needle will not penetrate more than 2.5 millimetres (mm) into the skin. An ice pack will be used throughout the procedure to minimise any swelling or bruising.

How does the lip enhancement treatment help with facial aesthetics?
  • Lip fillers enhance lip size for plumper lips which look full and beautiful when you smile. Thin lips can appear to disappear when smiling.
  • Asymmetry or scars on the lips can be corrected with lip augmentation.
  • The treatment can balance upper and lower lip sizes to achieve the golden ratio for lips.
  • Enhancement can give more definition to the curve in the centre of your upper lip (Cupid’s bow).
  • Add definition to the edges of your lips (vermillion border) and reduce lines and creases around the mouth area (oral commissures) including, ‘smoker’s lines’ or ‘lipstick lines.’
  • Lip fillers increase hydration to the lips.
  • Define and improve philtrum column.
  • The treatment can resemble a lip lift without the need for surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for a lip enhancement treatment?
Whether it is age-related or you need more definition and volume to your lips, lip enhancements are suitable for any adult with thin lips, Marionette lines, smoker’s lines, lip scars, asymmetrical-shaped lips, and less-accentuated lips.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable soft, gel-like substances – synthetic and fats, used to create a fuller and smoother appearance in skin tissue. They are often used for lips, face, and other parts of the body, including the back of the hands. They can minimise signs of ageing, skin depressions & scars, fine lines, deep wrinkles, and folds in the skin.
Are there any major side effects?
The risk of side effects is often eliminated or reduced with the professional administration of lip fillers. However, side effects can include swelling, bruising, infection, redness, tenderness, and moderate discomfort.
What is the recovery period?
Recovery time is between 12 to 48 hours. Your lips may be swollen, tender, and red for a few days after the treatment, usually 48 hours. There’s no need for any downtime or change in routine, except following medical instructions, including not wearing makeup. Use mineral/natural makeup when necessary after 12 hours.

It is best to avoid eating before the anaesthetic wears off, as you might accidentally bite your lip and disturb the filler. Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, and puckering & contracting your lips for at least 24 hours.

How long will the results last?
Results may vary from person to person. However, lip filler results can last from 6-9 months. Dermal fillers are gradually broken down and absorbed by the body, so after this period, your lips will return to their previous appearance. You can make the results last with top-up treatment. Smoking, sun exposure, and the rate of filler breakdown by your body can also affect the longevity of the results.
What concerns can lip enhancements fix?
Thinning lips, asymmetrical lips, fine lines on lips & mouth area, scars & indentation on lips, and lost definition of lips can be corrected with lip enhancements.
