Made redundant by evolution, wisdom teeth can be a nasty surprise. Unlike their name suggests, they do not serve a positive purpose and commonly cause dental health issues. Frequently asked questions

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars and the last of the permanent teeth to come through. 4 wisdom teeth can appear, 1 in each corner of the jaw. They usually develop between the ages of 18 and 25. Some never develop wisdom teeth, others experience a normal eruption, and most people experience impacted teeth.

What are the reasons for wisdom teeth extraction?

The adult mouth does not always have enough room for wisdom teeth to grow. They can erupt unevenly, partially or not at all. Impacted wisdom teeth cause a wide range of issues, such as inflammation of the gum or operculum, bleeding gums, halitosis, infection, and pain in the mouth and jaw.

What happens if you don't remove impacted wisdom teeth?

An impacted wisdom tooth can be life-threatening if you develop an abscess. It can also cause dental damage (fractured teeth), cysts, dental decay, gum disease, overcrowding, cellulitis, sinus issues, and alignment issues. You might also experience numbness and loss of movement in your jaw, sometimes permanently.

What to expect when removing wisdom teeth?

Your oral surgeon will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. The bone blocking the tooth root is surgically removed. Sometimes, the tooth is removed in segments. Once the whole tooth is removed, the site is cleaned and stitched up if necessary.

Will you require anesthesia for the procedure?

Yes, local anaesthesia is necessary as it is an invasive procedure. If you are nervous, IV sedation can be requested. Special circumstances require general anaesthesia and such treatments are carried out in a hospital.

How can you prepare before a wisdom tooth extraction?

If you are getting intravenous anaesthesia, you must stop eating and drinking after midnight the night before the procedure. Avoid alcohol and tobacco at least 8 hours before surgery. Make arrangements for someone to drive you from the dental practice after the procedure, especially if you are getting IV sedation.

How long will the procedure take?

It can take anywhere between minutes to 20 minutes, or sometimes even longer. The length of the surgery depends on how impacted the wisdom tooth is.

Do I have to take painkillers?

Post-surgery, your oral surgeon will prescribe painkillers to alleviate any pain you might experience.

Wisdom tooth extraction aftercare tips

Do not eat or drink anything for the first 6 hours after the procedure. Eat soft foods for a day or two following surgery. Avoid brushing your teeth, rinsing the mouth, spitting, using mouthwash, or using a straw for 24 hours after surgery. Be gentle near the surgical wound when brushing, and gently rinse with the prescribed mouthwash for a week.

What is the recovery period?

The recovery period may last up to 2 weeks. You might have swollen cheeks and mild bruising that will gradually improve. Cold compresses to your face help reduce the swelling.
