What conditions and concerns are dental fillings used for?

Dental fillings are a dental restorations treatment used to repair damaged, decayed or worn teeth. They are used to repair cracked or broken teeth and help prevent further deterioration by ‘filling’ in the cavity or crack.

Composite Dental Fillings vs other types of dental fillings

There are different types of fillings used and depending on your requirement you will be recommended the best option for you.

Composite fillings
These fillings have a more natural appearance as the composite resin can be customised to match the shade of your teeth, making them practically unnoticeable.
Amalgam fillings
These were the most widely used filling materials previously, but composite fillings have been growing in popularity. Dental amalgam is also referred to as silver amalgam or silver fillings because of their appearance. Following strict safety conditions, an amalgam putty is formed and softened and placed and shaped into the prepared cavity. It then rapidly hardens into a solid filling and fills the cavity.
Ceramic fillings
This is a long-lasting filling with an expectancy of about 15 years, which consists of a type of dental porcelain, It is a two-visit process.
Glass ionomer fillings
This is a flexible paste that is used as a sealant to help your tooth remain protected. It is used to form a tight seal between the compromised tooth and the environment. Out of the materials used for fillings, this is the least durable and is typically used to plug smaller cavities.
Gold fillings
Also known as inlays or onlays, gold fillings are a mix of an alloy of gold, copper and other materials. They are very durable with a lifespan of about 20 years or more but are also the most expensive. Gold fillings require more than one visit to complete the process and are very visible once placed.

Benefits of Composite Dental Fillings

Natural appearance
These tooth coloured fillings blend in well with the tooth enamel so as to look natural and not stand out against your teeth. They are practically invisible.
Stable
Composite fillings can be placed with minimal enamel removal when compared to silver dental fillings. This allows your tooth structure to maintain its integrity and strength. The filling actually provides additional strength to the weakened tooth.
Non-toxic
This is perfect for those susceptible to allergies as resin fillings have no adverse effects.
Quick results
Composite fillings harden quickly, bonding with your tooth within a few seconds, and are less likely to pop out. Once the filling is applied to the enamel, a special light helps accelerate the hardening process.
Temperature resistant
Their insulating properties help keep them resistant and protected from hot and cold foods, which means they do not weaken or crack due to expanding or contracting.
Versatile
Composite fillings are used in a variety of dental care treatments, such as repairing chipped, cracked, broken or worn-down teeth, besides being used to fill cavities.

The procedure

The composite dental fillings procedure is quite straight forward and can be completed in one visit, unless yours is a special case requiring anything further appointments. It is a minimally invasive treatment.

Your dentist will select a shade of composite resin that best suits your natural tooth colour. This will be done at the start before your mouth and teeth dry out so as to make the match as close as possible.

Then an anaesthetic will be administered to numb the tooth and the surrounding area, so that you feel no pain. Your dentist will then drill your tooth enamel to remove the decayed part of the tooth. Then the tooth will be cleaned and dried and depending on the level of damage your tooth has, it could include some tooth shaving.

Your dentist will then etch and bond the tooth. Composite filling will be layered into the hole in your tooth and once filled, a special light will be used to cure the composite filling and help it set securely. As the filling is applied in layers each layer is cured individually with the light before moving onto the next.

Once hardened, your dentist will shape and contour the treated tooth and polish it. Finally your bite will be checked to ensure that you are comfortable, and that tooth can function properly after the treatment.

Are Composite Dental Fillings permanent?

Composite fillings are incredibly strong and great to treat most cavities but are not permanent and will probably have to be replaced after about 7 to 10 years.
