What are Damon braces?

Damon braces are a type of braces that help straighten and fix orthodontic problems such as overcrowding and bite problems and are an option provided to patients alongside traditional metal braces. The main difference between Damon braces and other types of braces is how they do the straightening. Unlike traditional braces that have elastic ties surrounding each bracket, Damon braces use a self-ligating system to connect the memory wires to the brackets. Teeth are more adaptable to movement owing to it being self-ligating which are also gentler and more sensitive to the mouth tissue. That is why Damon braces are consider faster and more comfortable than traditional braces plus they attract less plaque and allow for easier brushing and flossing.

What are Damon braces made out of?

There are a variety of Damon braces in the market all made from a combination of fully stainless steel or stainless steel and a clear material. The stainless steel gives the brace stability and consists of a rounded structure which provides comfort and enhancing overall performance.

Damon Braces vs regular braces: What is the difference?

While they both are orthodontic treatments treating similar issues there are quite a number of differences between Damon braces and traditional braces.

  • As mentioned, Damon braces do not have elastic ligatures and instead have self-ligating brackets with a door mechanism that can be opened and close to hold the tooth-aligning memory wires.
  • Damon braces are virtually invisible when you choose the Damon clear option which is resistant to stains. Unlike conventional braces there are no visible metal parts or rubber bands that can discolour during the treatment.
  • Each person responds differently to braces and the discomfort of comfort levels experienced vary according to each individual. However, Damon braces are said to be more comfortable as the move is done gradually at a more natural pace. The Damon system exert a lighter force and with a simpler system it causes less discomfort, though initially most patients will feel some soreness till then get used to it.
  • Oral hygiene is definitely easier to maintain with Damon braces because they have few parts and so make cleaning your teeth and gums as well as the braces themselves much more convenient.
  • Opting for Damon braces could mean fewer dental visits when compared to traditional braces which need more maintenance care.

Consultation and procedure

At your initial consultation your dentist will examine your teeth and based on your requirement determine and discuss with you the best option for your purpose. Once agreed upon the brackets will be attached during your next visit, which could take two visits to complete. Your teeth will be cleaned thoroughly before the brackets are attached. Depending on your teeth and your treatment getting your braces fixed can take about one to two hours. Some parts of the procedure might be sensitive but overall it is relatively painless.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for Damon braces?

If you have good oral health and are looking to have teeth straightened or moved to improve issues such as crooked teeth, overcrowding, open bite, overbite and poor spacing, then do get in touch with a dentist because Damon braces could really help you.

Once teeth are aligned after the procedure, are the results permanent?
Results are permanent but you will need to wear a retainer at night to help the teeth adjust to their new positions. Your dentist may even fix a small wire or lingual brace inside for about six months to help your teeth stay in place.
How often do the braces need to be refitted?
Damon braces have a self-tightening slide mechanism which means the braces are automatically and continuously tightening little by little. So you do not really need to go in that regularly unless there is a special issue that needs to be looked into. You may have to go in periodically just for your dentist to check on the progress and make any adjustments if necessary.
Aftercare?

Once your braces are in place you have to ensure good oral hygiene by rinsing with mouthwash regularly to get rid of any food particles stuck around your braces.
Clean between each set of brackets to remove food particles. Use a soft-bristled tooth brush and use a circular motion to clean your teeth.

Try and brush your teeth after a meal and if not possible then rinse thoroughly. Always examine your braces properly to ensure that no food particles or plaque are remaining.

With Damon braces you can floss.

Be mindful of the types of food you eat as if they are too sticky then can cause your brackets and wires to pop off your teeth. Bubble gum, caramel, peanuts, taffy and hard candy can cause serious damage to your braces.

How much do Damon braces cost?

The cost of Damon braces ranges between £1,500 and £6,000, with most cases falling in the £3,000 – £5,000 range. However the Damon braces cost will finally depend on the amount of work you will need done.
