Frequently asked questions

What is Dental Erosion?

Dental erosion is the irreversible loss of tooth enamel caused by high acid content. It is an acid-mediated tissue loss without bacterial involvement. It gradually starts with the loss of superficial enamel layers, progressing to reveal the dentin underneath. Left untreated, it results in tooth damage, infection, and eventually tooth loss.

What causes dental erosion?

Causes can be internal or external. Internal causes include gastroesophageal reflux, bulimia, dry mouth, plaque, frequent vomiting, and chronic alcoholism. External causes include consuming acidic food and drink, such as sodas, juices, and sports drinks. Beverages with a pH value below 4.0 are highly acidic to your teeth. Occupational and lifestyle risks like wine tasters and competitive swimmers can also develop tooth erosion. Medications like aspirin or vitamin C tablets can also increase acidic content in the mouth.

What are the symptoms of dental erosion?

Tooth sensitivity, discolouration, cracks & chips, smooth & shiny tooth surfaces, and cupping or indentations on the biting and chewing surfaces are the key symptoms.

Is dental erosion reversible?

Unfortunately, dental erosion is not reversible. Taking action as soon as signs appear can protect the remaining tooth structure. You can also prevent tooth erosion with proper dental care habits.

How is dental erosion diagnosed?

Visual inspection is the principal method of diagnosis. Your dentist will conduct a clinical exam and a systematic case history with risk factor analysis. They will also ask you about tooth sensitivity.

What are the treatment options for dental erosion?

Remineralising treatments, such as fluoride varnishes, intraoral pH neutralisers, and salivary flow stimulants, prevent further tooth erosion. Your dentist will also recommend products for teeth sensitivity, dietary changes, and oral care habits. Restorative treatments like composite fillings, bonding, dental crowns, veneers, inlays, onlays, and root canals can treat erosion damage, protect teeth, and strengthen the tooth structure.

What happens if you leave dental erosion untreated?

As dental erosion advances, the enamel wears away to reveal the underlying dentine. Tooth surfaces become yellow. If you have any fillings, they become exposed and prominent. Your teeth will become highly sensitive and painful. As the enamel dissolves, teeth become more susceptible to decay. Uneven teeth will result from chips and cracks. If the dental pulp gets infected, you will need root canal treatment and, worst case scenarios, extractions. There’s a chance the nerves may get damaged.

Aftercare tips for dental erosion treatment

Cut down on acidic food and drink. Minimise eating or drinking sugary, starchy, and carbonated food and drink. Brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush. Drink fluoridated tap water and brush with fluoride toothpaste. Avoid chewable vitamin C tablets. Use sugar-free chewing gum after meals to promote saliva flow. Go for regular dental checkups and hygienist treatments. Consume more dairy products.

How long does dental erosion treatment take?

Each treatment takes different times. Dental bonding may take only a few minutes per tooth. You can get same-day crowns and veneers at Mouth. Other types of permanent veneers and crowns may take weeks. Cerec on-site printing can also create onlays inlays for single appointment treatment. A root canal treatment may take up to an hour. A normal composite filling may take as little as 20 minutes.

What can you expect at a dental erosion treatment?

Your dentist will take time to examine your teeth and identify the affected teeth. They will explain the type of treatment you need to restore and fix the erosion process. Sometimes, you may require multiple treatments depending on the dental problems you have. If you need crowns or veneers, they will take impressions of your teeth. You might need to wear temporary veneers and crowns until permanent ones are ready.
