What are the benefits of Porcelain veneers?

Veneers are a key component of cosmetic dentistry as they help patients regain their confidence with a restored brilliant smile. However, they go beyond just the aesthetic value as they also help improve the quality of life of patients who suffer with bite issues and massive gaps between their teeth. Veneers help bring structure to the jaw and stop teeth from moving around and causing further complications.

Porcelain veneers are particularly popular because they are one of the most durable options available in the market. Although it is wafer thin, porcelain veneers last for about 10 years. They are custom made for each patient and are translucent so that they can more closely resemble existing teeth. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant.

What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain dental veneers are thin shells that are applied to the top surface of your teeth. They improve the aesthetics of your teeth which is why they are used to treat a number of different cosmetic concerns. They also help protect the tooth surface from damage.
What are Porcelain Veneers made of?
As the name suggests, these are made of dental porcelain which is chemically very stable with a thermal conductivity similar to those of tooth enamel and dentine. It also does not deteriorate with time.
What is the difference between Porcelain veneers and regular veneers?
There are three main types of veneers based on the material used to fabricate them. While there are differences, all veneers are thin and designed to be durable and stain resistant so that they can withstand the daily wear and tear your natural teeth go through.

Porcelain veneers – These are one of the more popular options with patients seeking to make small alterations to their teeth such as the size, colour, and shape.

Ceramic veneers – Ceramic veneers are also quite popular as the have a natural appearance and can mimic your natural tooth really well. They are very durable.

Composite veneers – Made out of dental composite resin which is a tooth-coloured restorative dental cement made of synthetic resins. It is cost-effective and can usually be placed with just one visit to the dentist, as they require less tooth preparation. High quality composite veneers can look natural.

Who are Porcelain veneers recommended for?
If you are looking to change the appearance of your smile and have healthy gums and good bone structure, then most likely your cosmetic dentist will recommend porcelain veneers for you. Some of the dental issues that can be treated by porcelain veneers include:

What are the benefits of Porcelain veneers?

The first step to getting your porcelain veneers is to have an appointment with a Dentist to discuss if veneers are the right option for you. You will need to determine how many veneers you want and if any shaping or fixing is required. If your teeth are very crooked, then that issue will have to be sorted first with braces.

During this preliminary consultation your dentist will probably take an x-ray of your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine your oral health and look for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, or if you need any root canals. If you have any of these issues, then they will be treated first before you can get veneers done.

Porcelain veneers treatment is minimally invasive to the extent that your tooth will have to be trimmed down slightly and the enamel removed using a grinding tool, after which a mould impression will be taken. Based on this mould the lab will create your permanent veneers. In the meantime, you will be fitted with temporary veneers. The process is not painful as the area is usually numbed to reduce sensitivity.

On your second visit your temporary veneers will be removed, and the permanent veneers cemented into place with bonding glue. If you are getting more than one veneer, each will be checked for placement to ensure that you have a proper bite and that it will not be affected by your normal daily life.

Two dental visits are usually sufficient for the entire process to be completed, with the actual fitting lasting between one to two hours.

Aftercare: Porcelain Veneers
Practicing good oral care daily is essential. You must maintain the health of your natural teeth as they are still susceptible to plaque, cavities, and discolouration. Brush and floss daily using the recommended dental care products.

Veneers are great for teeth whitening but must be looked after as they can become discoloured over time if you do not take care to avoid staining from food and drinks. If you do consume such food or drink, be sure to clean your teeth as soon as possible.

Avoid Damaging Habits
Dental veneers are strong, but certain habits can damage them; chewing ice and biting fingernails can end up damaging the veneers. People should avoid these habits together with others that can chip or break the veneers under pressure.
How long do Porcelain Veneers last?

With proper care and cleaning porcelain veneers can last for about 10 years.

How much do Porcelain veneers cost?
As a long-term solution, porcelain veneers cost from £990 per tooth depending on each patient’s requirements.
