What are retainers?
Retainers are dental appliances that are used at the end of orthodontic treatment to hold the straightened teeth in their newly-shifted place as the surrounding gum and bone adjust to their new position. Without retainers, teeth will shift back to their original position.
Types of retainers
Retainers are either fixed, removable, or clear plastic.
Fixed – These are made of thin, custom-fitted wire, curved to fit the shape of your newly straightened teeth and bonded to the inside of teeth. They are mostly used on lower teeth and are also called permanent, lingual wire, and bonded retainers.
Removable – These retainers are made from thin metal wire, plastic, or acrylic. Hawley retainers are a traditional variety shaped to fit the roof of your mouth or along the inside of your lower teeth. Metal wire attached to them run across the outside of your teeth.
Clear plastic – Also called moulded retainers, these removable retainers are precision molded to perfectly fit the new position of your teeth. They are vacuum-formed with thermoplastic to a mould of the teeth.
Transparent retainers vs. regular retainers
Transparent retainers are virtually invisible, which is an incentive for constant wear. They are thinner and more comfortable. These retainers do not affect your speech. Oral hygiene and eating are easier as the retainers are removed to clean teeth and at meal times. If broken, they need to be replaced and cannot be repaired. They can discolour and must be removed at all times when eating and drinking. You can drink only water wearing clear retainers.
Regular retainers are more noticeable, can affect your speech, and irritate the tongue, lips, and cheeks, depending on the type of retainer. They can also make teeth cleaning difficult, and there are certain food and drink to avoid. Fixed retainers can be adjusted for a better fit if your teeth need slight realignment later. They can also be repaired if broken. They allow the upper and lower teeth to touch naturally.
Transparent Vivera retainers
These are clear and virtually invisible aligners custom-made for each patient at the end of orthodontic treatment. They are twice as durable and 30% stronger than other retainers. Vivera retainers can be manufactured from an existing ClinCheck® stage, a new PVS impression, or an intraoral scan. They are made from SmartTrack™, the same premium-grade material Invisalign aligners are made from.

How long does it take to see results?
Retention protocols differ from patient to patient and depend on the condition and treatment plan. Your dentist will prescribe the period and how often you have to wear your retainers. Sometimes the first set is worn full time, then based on follow-up instructions, the time is gradually reduced to only at night or even three nights a week.
Types of dental issues that can be corrected via retainers
- They prevent treatment reversal
- They stabilise your bite
- For younger wearers, they help maintain space for wisdom teeth by keeping teeth straight and aligned
- Retainers align your jawbones with gums – when your teeth are moved to a new position, the gums and bones around the teeth take some time to adjust to the new alignment.
How to keep your retainers in good condition
Vivera retainers are easy to clean. However, it’s important to receive proper care instruction from your doctor. We recommend using the Invisalign Aligner Cleaning System or a similar product. A soft bristle toothbrush and water with or without some toothpaste will help you clean the retainers gently. Each retainer must be thoroughly rinsed with water after cleaning. Whenever you notice cracks, superficial damage, or signs of breakage, it’s time to switch to a fresh new set. Vivera gives you three sets of retainers, so a backup is always at hand.
Will the retainers need to be re-adjusted?
No, Vivera retainers do not need adjusting.
How much do transparent Vivera retainers cost?
Vivera retainers single arch £350
Vivera retainers double arch £500
